On my first trip to Estonia I flew into Tallinn, a nice and modern airport. Upon arrival I checked out the prices for buying a sim card at Tallinn Airport and while strolling through the city I hopped into mobile phone stores to see what they were offering. The article is now updated with direct info from the providers websites as per February 2022.

As a full time travel blogger the first thing I do when arriving at a new country is to make sure I get online. The best way to do so is to buy a local sim card with data. All around the world I researched for the best local prepaid sim cards: USA, Guatemala, Indonesia, Finland, MoscowPoland and many more.

My recommendation

Traveltomtom recommends a Tele2 prepaid sim card for Estonia. They have good 4G network coverage throughout the country and for €21 you get unlimited data.

We do NOT directly recommend an international sim cards with global coverage. Most of these sim cards are incredibly expensive compared to local sim cards. But there are some good ones, check out the 12 best ones in the link above.

Estonia sim cards and traveling in Europe

Since summer of 2017 roaming charges in the EU are from the past and roaming is free of charge with most European sim cards. But be careful there are often still a bunch of restrictions.

When buying an Estonia sim card always ask the mobile internet provider if you can use your data allowance in other European countries as well at no extra costs. At the Telia and Tele2 shop it was a hard no!

It is a bit of a hassle tho since you have to buy credit, top up, activate, etc. Therefore when looking to buy a sim card at Tallinn Airport I advice you to go for a Tele2 prepaid sim card, it also gives you more value for money.

Best Estonia mobile network

To determine the best Estonia sim card let's also have a look at the network coverage maps of all the mobile internet providers.

Is there 5G in Estonia?

Yes, as of there is no 5G in Estonia, but it is pretty much limited to Tallinn only. Telia has the best 5G network coverage in Estonia, but it is still very small as per February 2022 compared to other European countries. Click on the link for more detailed Estonia 4G/5G network coverage maps.

Elisa Estonia 4G/5G network

Tele2 Estonia 4G/5G network

tele2 estonia 4g 5g coverage maps

Telia Estonia 4G/5G network

telia estonia 4g 5g coverage maps

From the above data we can see that the mobile internet providers in Estonia have a pretty similar network coverage in 2022. If you are traveling to the islands west of Tallinn: Aegna, Naissaar, and Prangli I would not recommend you a TELE2 prepaid sim card as their coverage is not the best out there. Furthermore we can see that Telia indeed has the most extensive 5G network in Estonia.

Based on the network we see that most of the tourist destinations in Estonia are covered by a 4G signal. Based on the prices I come to the following conclusion:

TELE2 is the best prepaid sim card in Estonia for tourists in 2022!

You can get a sim card with unlimited internet for €21 valid for 1 month and best thing is you can buy it straight on arrival at Tallinn Airport.

When you are traveling from Estonia onwards to other countries in Europe then I can NOT recommend you Estonia prepaid sim cards. They do NOT allow (or limited) free roaming in Europe. You will either have to buy another sim card in the next country or buy a sim card for Europe online.
