Planning your Estonia trip and wondering what is the best way to stay connected and get data on your phone? Don't get stuck with high roaming charges or slow overseas data roaming plans. This is a complete guide for finding the best sim card for traveling to Estonia in 2024.

Find out everything you need to know about buying a prepaid sim card in Estonia, with the best 4G/5G network, up to date prices as per April 2024, the best e-sim cards for Estonia, my recommendation, where to buy a sim card, info about buying a sim card at Tallinn Airport, info about international sim cards, EU data roaming and more.

Depending on the length of your trip to Estonia a prepaid sim card or an e-sim card is the best way to stay connected and save money on high roaming charges. One of the first things I do when planning my next trip abroad is figuring out what is the best way to stay connected and whether to order an e-sim card on the internet or buying a local prepaid sim card on arrival.

Having internet on your phone while traveling makes life so much easier. In the past I always used to buy a prepaid sim card on arrival but nowadays I mostly order an e-sim card on the internet.

E-sim cards are simply so convenient that I happily pay a couple dollar extra to be online as soon as the plane lands and have internet on my phone like at home without paying high roaming charges.

As Traveltomtom is on a mission to travel to every country in the world I get to about 30 - 40 different countries every year and therefore I use about 30 different sim cards per year. As I am already traveling full time since 2012 buying prepaid and e-sim cards became part of life and that is how Traveltomtom became the ultimate specialist in providing info about sim cards for tourists.

Since I like to document all my travel tips you can already find more than 200 sim card guides on Traveltomtom from all around the world: USA, New YorkGuatemala, Indonesia, Finland, MoscowPoland, Pakistan, Oman, Tanzania, Costa Rica, Bogota, Paraguay, Europe, Malaysia, Vietnam, Australia and many more.

My recommendation

Traveltomtom recommends a Tele2 prepaid sim card for traveling to Estonia. They have good 4G/5G network coverage throughout the country and a prepaid sim card plan for tourists with unlimited data for about $23 USD.

Arrive prepared and be online as soon as the plane lands with an e-sim card for Estonia and they already start from just $4.5 USD and for $32 USD you get 20 GB data. Or get yourself an e-sim card with 30 GB data valid in all of Europe + unlimited calls for $44.90 USD.

Traveltomtom recommends ordering an e-sim card for Estonia via SimOptions or Airalo.

Another great way to stay connected when traveling abroad are global sim cards with data. Check out Traveltomtom's comparison of the best global sim cards with data in 2024 if you are traveling to multiple countries on your trip to Estonia.

There is also a list specifically for sim cards for Europe trips.

Best e-sim cards for Estonia

The easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Estonia in 2024 is an e-sim card. You arrange everything online in just a couple clicks. No more visiting a phone store and swapping physical prepaid sim cards.

You order an e-sim card for Estonia on the internet, you receive a QR code, scan it, follow the simple steps and within less than 2 minutes you have an Estonia e-sim card installed on your phone.

Upon arrival in Estonia it automatically connects you to an available network and you enjoy data on your phone pretty much when the plane lands.

Make sure your phone is e-sim compatible before ordering an e-sim card for Estonia.

Airalo

Airalo is a reliable e-sim provider and Traveltomtom has used Airalo in more than 50 countries around the world and never faced an issue. Here are the Airalo e-sim card plans for Estonia for 2024:

  • 1 GB data for 7 days = $4.5 USD
  • 2 GB data for 15 days = $7 USD
  • 3 GB data for 30 days = $9.5 USD

The above e-sim cards for Estonia are from Estekom. They operate on the 4G/LTE network of Tele2 and Telia in Estonia. 5G is not supported, just as incoming and outgoing calls. The Estekom e-sim cards are data-only.

SimOptions

SimOptions is another reliable e-sim provider that sells e-sim cards from pretty much every country in the world. Traveltomtom has been using SimOptions sim cards for more than 5 years now without a problem.

SimOptions offers international e-sim cards that are valid in all of Europe and beyond. They also pretty much all include unlimited texting and calling. Check out their wide range of e-sim cards for Estonia in 2024:

There is another e-sim provider tested and reviewed by Traveltomtom and although they sometimes have great e-sim card deals it is not Traveltomtom's first recommendation. Personally I have faced some issues with Nomad e-sim cards and unless they are not improving on reliability and performance Traveltomtom is not recommending Nomad e-sim cards over Airalo and SimOptions.

If your phone is not e-sim compatible you can also still get a physical prepaid sim card for Estonia on the internet. There are some great options available like the Orange Holiday Europe sim card with 30 GB data for $49.90 USD.

Click on the link to order it directly online or find more info about it. Or check out my article about the best sim cards for traveling in Europe for more physical prepaid sim cards.

Estonia sim cards and EU data roaming

Since 2017 roaming charges in the EU are from the past and data roaming is free of charge with most European sim cards. That means you can use the prepaid sim card you buy in Estonia in all other countries in Europe.

But be careful there are still a bunch of restrictions, so when buying an Estonia sim card always ask the mobile internet provider if you can use your data allowance in other European countries as well at no extra costs.

At the Telia and Elisa shop it was a hard no and their prepaid sim cards do not include free EU data roaming.

If you are looking for sim cards dedicated for Europe travel then check out Traveltomtom's comparison of the best Europe sim cards for 2024.

It is a bit of a hassle tho since you have to buy credit, top up, activate, etc. Therefore when looking to buy a sim card at Tallinn Airport I advice you to go for a Tele2 prepaid sim card, it also gives you more value for money.

Best Estonia 4G/5G mobile network

To determine the best Estonia sim card let's also have a look at the network coverage maps of all the mobile internet providers.

Is there 5G in Estonia?

Yes, there is 5G in Estonia and it is pretty well spread our around the country. Elisa has the best 5G network coverage in Estonia. Click on the link for more detailed Estonia 4G/5G network coverage maps.

Elisa Estonia 4G/5G network

Tele2 Estonia 4G/5G network

tele2 4g 5g network coverage map estonia 2024

Telia Estonia 4G/5G network

telia 4g 5g network coverage map estonia 2024

Although the above mobile data network coverage maps are updated for 2024 they are not 100% accurate. However, they are a great reference to compare the 4G/5G networks of the mobile internet providers in Estonia in 2024.

From the above data we can see that the mobile internet providers in Estonia have a pretty similar 4G/5G network. But Traveltomtom comes to the conclusion that Telia has the most extensive 4G/5G network in Estonia in 2024.

Best sim card for Estonia in 2024

From the comparison of the mobile data network coverage we see that most of the tourist destinations in Estonia are covered by a 4G/LTE signal. Tele2 offers a prepaid sim card with unlimited internet for €21 EUR ($23 USD) valid for 1 month.

You can buy this sim card on arrival at Tallinn Airport which is a big plus rather than finding a sim card shop on arrival.

All in all Traveltomtom comes to the conclusion that Tele2 is the best prepaid sim card in Estonia in 2024.

That said, we shouldn't forget about e-sim cards because there is nothing better than having a working data connection on your phone straight when you land. No more buying a prepaid sim card on arrival.

Traveltomtom recommends ordering an e-sim card for Estonia via SimOptions or Airalo.

There are e-sim cards for Estonia with 10 GB data for just $21 USD and for most people that is more than enough for their trip to Estonia.

If Estonia is your first stop on a trip to Europe then Traveltomtom definitely recommends looking into my list of the best sim cards for traveling in Europe in 2024.
