Netherlands
Travel and culinary experiences often go hand in hand. For us that's the case anyway. Special travel memories are often linked to culinary experiences you had in a destination. We always look forward to new destinations, also to try and experience the local food. On the other hand, food can also be the reason to return to destinations.
We recently visited Eindhoven, a city in the south of the Netherlands, also called the city of lights. We had a special culinary experience here that we would like to share with you. So keep reading and mark this blog for your next visit to Eindhoven and the Netherlands.

As Dutchies at Traveltomtom we are big fans of the Van der Valk hotel group. We love staying at their hotels and have fond memories of previous visits. For a visit to Eindhoven we came into contact with the fairly new hotel Eindhoven - Best.
We have worked with quite a few Valk Exclusief hotels the past few years. Check out our Schiphol, Heerlen, Amsterdam Zuidas, Akersloot, Tilburg & Utrecht blogposts for example. Our blog post about the best places to visit in Netherlands is also full of Valk Exclusief properties.

It was time for another trip in the Netherlands. This time our destination was a place we know well, because we had stayed there before, Breukelen. Even though Breukelen is only a really small town, we didn’t know the amazing boutique hotel Flora Batava existed.

In recent years we have made more and more trips in The Netherlands. And it is so much fun to discover unknown places in your own country.
We still look for new places in the Netherlands several times a year. One of our favorite regions is the Achterhoek, in the east of the country. It is enormous, lots of nature, nice and quiet, lovely villages, many castles, the perfect ingredients for a nice weekend away.

The Veluwe is one of my favorite places to visit in the Netherlands. It’s the perfect destination for a relaxed or a sporty outdoor weekend. I like to travel to the Veluwe to relax and enjoy nature and the outdoors.
I also love to explore and experience new parts of the Veluwe. We did exactly that just recently when we visited Hotel de Beyaerd.

As a kid in the Netherlands I grew up with the Efteling. Everyone knows it and every child would love to visit. The Efteling is the oldest, largest, best-known and most popular amusement park in the Netherlands. The Efteling is also the largest amusement park in the Benelux in terms of visitor. After Disneyland in Paris and the German Europa Park the Efteling is the most visited theme park in Europe.

We often undervalue our own region and only look at far and exotic destinations. That is of course a shame, because often the biggest surprises are literally just around the corner. I never realized what a wonderful place the Terworm Estate in Heerlen is, with everything it has to offer today. We recently spent a full weekend at the Terworm Estate. A wonderful weekend in the middle of nature, luxury, tranquility and wellness. This blog tells you all about our experiences staying at the Terworm Estate.

We love traveling to Amsterdam, our capital city, it’s always fun. Earlier this year we visited Rotterdam and stayed at the amazing nhow Rotterdam. During that stay we fell in love with the nhow hotel brand. So, when we found out that there was another nhow hotel in Amsterdam, we couldn’t wait to check it out.
Luckily we had another trip to Amsterdam planned. And so it happened that, just a few months after staying in Rotterdam, we now explored and experienced the nhow Amsterdam RAI.

Sometimes you don’t have to travel half way across the world to discover some unique hidden gems. In this case we only had to travel 5 minutes from home for a super special accommodation. I knew the medieval Abbey of Rolduc from back in the day when we used to run the annual Abbey Cross running event here with our primary school. But after that I actually hadn’t visited this corner of the Netherlands for years, even though it’s only a 5 minute drive away.
We travel to every corner of our world for Traveltomtom, but now it was about time to explore our own backyard for a change and that is how we ended up staying in the Abbey of Rolduc.

There are a few things the Netherlands is really known and famous for. Cheese, windmills, tulips and perhaps the most famous of them all Delft Blue. Everyone in the Netherlands knows Delft Blue and most grandparents might have some Delft Blue in their home.
Because Delft Blue is often found at our grandparents home it has a bit of a dusty and old fashioned image to it. But, it feels as Dutch as can be, so when we got invited to come to the Delft Blue Museum for a guided tour and workshop, I couldn’t be more curious and enthusiastic.

Some hotels are a true icon and have played a very important part in history. One of these hotels is Hotel de Wereld, located in Wageningen, the Netherlands. The Bollenstreek (Bulb Region) and it’s tulip fields are one of the most famous and popular places to visit in the Netherlands. Back in 2016 Rotterdam was named as one of the top 10 cities in the world to visit by Lonely Planet’s ‘Best in Travel’. The city owes its place on the coveted list to its futuristic architecture, inspiring city initiatives and a growing range of art, culture, restaurants and entertainment venues.
Rotterdam, the city of reconstruction, was also mentioned by the New York Times and Rough Guide. Both recommended the Maasstad (Rotterdam’s nickname) as one of the best cities to visit in the world.

And of course we have found many beautiful spots all over our world during our travels the past few years. Obviously I noticed some pretty cool murals in the past, but I never knew that Heerlen actually was the street art capital of the Netherlands.
