Depending on the length of your trip to Slovenia a prepaid sim card or an e-sim card is the best way to stay connected and save money on high roaming charges. One of the first things I do when planning my next trip abroad is figuring out what is the best way to stay connected and whether to order an e-sim card on the internet or buying a local prepaid sim card on arrival.

Having internet on your phone while traveling to Slovenia makes life so much easier. In the past I always used to buy a prepaid sim card on arrival but nowadays I mostly order an e-sim card on the internet.

E-sim cards are simply so convenient to order online and as soon as the plane lands I have internet on my phone like at home without paying high roaming charges.

As Traveltomtom is on a mission to travel to every country in the world I get to about 30 - 40 different countries every year and therefore I use about 30 different sim cards per year. As I am already traveling full time since 2012 buying prepaid and e-sim cards became part of life and that is how Traveltomtom became the ultimate specialist in providing info about sim cards for tourists.

As I like to document all my travel tips you can already find more than 200 sim card guides on Traveltomtom from all around the world: Greece, Italy, London, Paris, Amsterdam, Thailand, Malaysia, Hong Kong, SingaporeColombia, USA, New York, Cameroon, Kenya, Ivory CoastShanghai, ChinaManila, Europe and so on.

My recommendation

Traveltomtom recommends an A1 sim card for Slovenia. A1 has very good 4G/5G network coverage in Slovenia and a good prepaid sim card plans for tourists. For $11 USD you get about 7 GB data.

It leaves no doubt Traveltomtom recommends e-sim cards over physical prepaid sim cards when traveling to Slovenia in 2024. E-sim cards make the whole process so easy and there is no time wasting buying a prepaid sim card for tourists on arrival in Slovenia. For $23.90 USD you get 15 GB data in all of Europe + unlimited calls.

Traveltomtom recommends ordering an e-sim card for Slovenia via either Airalo or SimOptions.

Is Slovenia your first stop in Europe? Then get yourself a sim card for traveling in Europe. You can find some amazing deals in Traveltomtom's comparison of the best sim cards for visiting Europe in 2024.

Prepaid sim cards you buy in Slovenia are NOT suited for traveling in Europe as they don't include EU data roaming. If you are on a trip around the world then check out Traveltomtom's list of the best international sim cards with global coverage.

Best e-sim cards for Slovenia

The easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Slovenia in 2024 is an e-sim card. You arrange everything online in just a couple clicks. No more visiting a phone store and swapping physical prepaid sim cards.

You order an e-sim card for Slovenia on the internet, you receive a QR code, scan it, follow the simple steps and within less than 2 minutes you have a Slovenia e-sim card installed on your phone.

Upon arrival in Slovenia it automatically connects you to an available network and you enjoy data on your phone pretty much when the plane lands.

Make sure your phone is e-sim compatible before ordering an e-sim card for Slovenia.

Airalo

Airalo is a reliable e-sim provider that sells e-sim cards from pretty much every country in the world. Traveltomtom has been using Airalo e-sim cards for almost 4 years now without a problem. Here are the Airalo e-sim card plans for Slovenia in 2024:

With an e-sim card you keep your own phone number from home, but make sure your phone is unlocked and e-sim compatible.

There is another e-sim provider tested and reviewed by Traveltomtom and although they sometimes have great e-sim card deals for Slovenia it is not Traveltomtom's first recommendation. Personally I have faced some issues with Nomad e-sim cards and unless they are not improving on reliability and performance Traveltomtom is not recommending Nomad e-sim cards over Airalo and SimOptions.

If your phone is not e-sim compatible then there still is the option to order a physical prepaid sim card for Slovenia on the internet. This physical prepaid sim card will be delivered to your home address before your trip to Slovenia.

There are pre-activated international sim cards for $24.90 USD with 10 GB data and unlimited calls/text in all of Europe. Check out SimOptions to order a physical prepaid sim card for Slovenia.

Slovenia prepaid sim cards and EU data roaming

Throughout this article you will find out that Slovenia sim cards are NOT the best for traveling in Europe. All the prepaid sim cards you can buy in Slovenia have no or very limited EU data roaming included in their data packages. That means if you buy a sim card in Slovenia and you travel onwards to Italy you have very limited data available and it is better to buy a new sim card in Italy.

However, if you are visiting multiple countries in Europe you are better choosing a sim card from Traveltomtom's comparison of the best prepaid and e-sim cards for traveling in Europe in 2024.

Mobile internet operators in Slovenia

Best 4G/5G Slovenia network in 2024

In 2024 all tourist destinations in Slovenia are covered with a 4G/LTE phone signal and even a 5G signal. There is however a difference in the 4G/5G network of Telemach, A1 and Telekom, so Traveltomtom compared the 4G/5G coverage maps of Slovenia below to show you which provider has the best mobile data network in Slovenia.

Is there 5G in Slovenia?

Yes, there is 5G in Slovenia however, it is mostly concentrated around Ljubljana and Maribor at the moment.

A1 Slovenia 4G/5G network coverage map

a1 4g 5g network coverage map slovenia 2024

Telekom Slovenia 4G/5G network coverage map

tmobile 4g 5g network coverage map slovenia 2024

Telemach Slovenia 4G/5G network coverage map

telemach 4g 5g network coverage map slovenia 2024

Although the above mobile data network coverage maps are updated for 2024 they are not 100% accurate. However, they are a great reference to compare the 4G/5G networks of the mobile internet providers in Slovenia in 2024.

From the updated Slovenia 4G/5G network coverage maps Traveltomtom comes to the conclusion that Telemach has a much weaker 4G/5G mobile data network compared to Telekom and A1.

Therefore a Telemach prepaid sim card is not Traveltomtom's first recommendation.

A1 has the best 5G network in Slovenia in 2024, but Telekom has the most extensive 4G/5G mobile data network in Slovenia in 2024.

Where to buy a Slovenia prepaid sim card

telekom slovenia shop

Ljubljana Airport

On arrival at the airport would of course be the most convenient place to buy a prepaid sim card for Slovenia. However, there are hardly any intercontinental flights arriving in Ljubljana and most European travelers don't buy prepaid sim cards anymore.

I guess that is why there is no sim card shop at Ljubljana Airport.

Phone stores city center

When you get to Ljubljana city center there are multiple mobile phone shops. Type in the by you preferred mobile operator on Google Maps and locsate the nearest one near your hotel. Ljubljana is a small city, you can easily walk everywhere. There are A1, Telekom and Telemach stores in all big cities and popular tourist destinations in Slovenia.

Unlike almost any other European country in Slovenia you do NOT need to bring a passport when buying a prepaid Slovenia sim card.

Convenience stores in Slovenia

You can also buy your sim card for Slovenia in the well known convenience stores, supermarkets and gas stations like Petrol, Big Bang, Harvey Norman, Mercator and Posta Slovenije. This is not Traveltomtom's first recommendation, but it works. Obviously the staff of these convenience stores or gas station have obviously no knowledge of these prepaid sim cards.

You can only buy set prepaid sim card packages and you will have to do the activation yourself.

Online

As I mentioned before, ordering a sim card for Slovenia on the internet is actually the easiest way to stay connected and avoid high roaming costs. No more visiting a sim card shop on arrival in Slovenia.

The fastest way is an e-sim card for Slovenia, it takes just a couple clicks and as soon as the plane lands you are connected to the internet and have data on your phone. Traveltomtom recommends ordering an e-sim card for Slovenia from either Airalo or SimOptions.

If your phone is not e-sim compatible then look into ordering an international prepaid sim cards that will be delivered to your home address. Check out SimOptions for ordering a physical prepaid sim card for Sloveniaordering a physical prepaid sim card for Slovenia.

Best Slovenia prepaid sim card in 2024

Comparing all the Slovenia prepaid sim card deals Traveltomtom comes to the following conclusions:

  • Telemach Slovenia prepaid sim cards are very flexible.
  • The 4G/5G network of Telemach is much smaller/weaker than A1 and Telekom.
  • Telemach allows limited EU data roaming, Telekom and A1 do NOT allow EU roaming at all.

All in all Traveltomtom rates A1 as the best prepaid sim card for Slovenia in 2024.

A1 has some good prepaid sim card plans for tourists and A1 has the best 4G/5G mobile data network in Slovenia. For $11 USD you get 7 GB data with an A1 prepaid sim card.

Comparing the Slovenia prepaid sim cards with e-sim cards for Slovenia you order on the internet we see that e-sim cards are a couple dollar more expensive, but the convenience is that you are online and have data on your phone as soon as the plane lands. No more wasting time finding a sim card shop in Slovenia.

The best buy e-sim card for Slovenia is a Bouygues Telecom e-sim with 15 GB data in all of Europe + unlimited calls for $23.90 USD Traveltomtom recommends ordering an e-sim card for Slovenia via either Airalo or SimOptions.
