On my Northern Europe road trip in May 2019 I crossed the bridge from Denmark into Sweden and tour around a little in the land of Ikea. As part of visiting all the European countries Im trying to find out about the best European sim card for tourists (click on the link for my final report). Therefore I researched all the prepaid sim cards in Sweden and found out which mobile operator offers the best one.
Surprisingly Sweden sim cards are pretty good deals when you are looking for the best international sim card for Europe! :)
In total I already found the best sim card for tourists in more than 30 countries worldwide, including places like Mexico, Vietnam, etc. but the European market is something more intriguing. On paper we try to behave like one European Union, but in reality the differences are huge. In 2017 the EU took a big step towards unification as it forbid EU roaming costs.
But there is still a long way to go on the EU sim card market. Take for example its neighbour Denmark. None of the mobile internet providers even sell prepaid Denmark sim cards at all. Sim cards in Poland are sold for extremely cheap, but are exempted from the EU free roaming law, etc. Read more about the best sim card in Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, etc. in these links.
Mobile internet providers Sweden
Sweden is a pretty open market for buying a prepaid sim card. There are 4 mobile internet providers in Sweden:
- 3 (Tre)
Tele2 Sweden is the only mobile internet provider that does NOT sell prepaid Sweden sim cards. All the others internet providers do!
To buy a sim card in Sweden you don’t need your passport, there is initially no registration needed.
Where to buy a Sweden prepaid sim card
Buying a prepaid sim card in Sweden is pretty straight forward as in every big city you can find a Telenor, Telia or 3 shop in the city center. Most of the times they are all clustered next to each other. Best way to find Sweden sim card shops is to go to Google Maps and type in the by your preferred mobile internet provider or simply search for ‘sim card’.
Your Sweden prepaid sim card will be activated in the shop and as soon as you walk out you will be able to use it.
Buy a Sweden sim card at the Stockholm Airport
Unfortunately I have not been to Stockholm in the last 2 years and I can’t give you the precise info on where to buy a sim card at Stockholm airport. Gothenburg Airport did have a mobile shop which was selling Lebara and Lyca sim cards, but buying a sim card at the airport is never really worth it apart from Brussels Airport. If you are not in a rush then wait a little till you get to the city center. Looking for tips for a weekend in Gothenburg or a weekend trip to Stockholm? Click on the link to see what I did.
Buy a sim card for traveling in Europe online
If you are going on a trip through Europe then may be you want to check into this sim card. The Orange sim card including 20GB data is valid in 35 EU countries and can be ordered online and shipped to your home address. Click on the link to see if you are eligible for free shipping as well.
Portable WiFi device
Want to connect more than one device to the internet at the same time then a TEP Wireless portable WiFi device could come in handy. They allow you to connect up to 5 devices at the same time and offer unlimited data per day. Also great if you are traveling with kids. See for more details in the link.
4G network mobile internet providers
Apart from the prices and the availability of the Sweden sim cards, network coverage is just as essential, especially if you are going off the beaten path in Sweden. I went for example on a self guided canoe trip in Värmland and found out that Telenor had the best network coverage in that area and therefore I purchased a Telenor sim card.
4G network 3 Sweden
4G network Telia Sweden
4G network Telenor Sweden
In the above pictures we can see that all the tourist destinations in Sweden have great 4G coverage on all networks. If you go off the beaten path there is a difference and it kind of depends where in Sweden you are traveling.
Sweden sim card prices
At Telenor they only have 1 prepaid Sweden sim card for sale.
Telenor - 149 SKR ($15)
- 5 GB data in Sweden and EU
- Unlimited Calling in Sweden and EU
- Unlimited texting in Sweden and EU
- Valid for 1 month
- Hotspot possible
Great thing about a Telenor Sweden prepaid sim card is that all the bundles are valid in all the EU countries. When traveling onwards from Sweden you can still use your Sweden sim card.
The price for a Telenor prepaid sim card printed on the above package is NOT right. IT says 199 Kr, but it only is 149 Kr.
There are top-up packages available as well:
- 10GB = 199 SKR
- 20GB = 249 SKR
- 100GB = 449 SKR
Telia offers much more prepaid sim cards packages, but to use their sim cards outside of Sweden you will need to register your sim card with a Swedish Tax Number. In case you have a friend living in Sweden he or she could do it for you, though not convenient for tourists at all!
Good thing is Telia Sweden offers prepaid sim cards that are valid for 6 months. Also their calling bundles are not per minute/hour but per call.
Tourist traveling in Europe I would not recommend a Telia Sweden sim card, just because registering the sim card for using it outside of Sweden is a pain! In case you would be able to register your Telia Sweden sim card, the data bundles in the EU are capped up to max 20GB per month!
3 (tre) Sweden
Unfortunately the prepaid sim cards from 3 Sweden are only for use in Sweden and there is no way to get around that. Therefore I would not recommend 3 Sweden for tourists traveling through Europe but neither when you are just traveling in Sweden.
They actually offer a lot of different prepaid sim card packages. In the below picture you can see an overview of what packages they offer.
For 3GB data including unlimited texting and calling in Sweden you pay 199 Krones ($20). 3 Sweden is cheaper than Telia, but more expensive than Telenor.
Best Sweden prepaid sim card
First of all Telenor has EU roaming which the other mobile internet providers don’t offer. Second it does not require you to register your sim card, third you get the most value for money and fourth it has the best network coverage.
Therefore is a pretty easy conclusion saying Telenor is the best prepaid sim card in Sweden!
Remember that you can also buy a European sim card online through this link and get it shipped home. Orange offers 20GB data valid in 35 countries including international calls. Click on the link to see if you can get free shipping to your home address as well.
Another way to tackle roaming costs are portable wifi devices. I can recommend you TEP Wireless with unlimited data in over 100 countries and you can connect multiple devices.
I hope the above tips about buying a Sweden sim card were helpful for your trip to Sweden and or Europe.
